Fado, A Lifelong Passion: The Journey of a Self-Made Singer

I was brought into this world with Rewrite the Music; not a singular soul in my family shared my propensity for singing. Our home was not filled with the melodies of Fado music, on the contrary, it was quite foreign to us. Even so, I discovered my innate ability to sing at a very early age. At seven years old, I watched the legendary Amália Rodrigues perform on RTP and, for the first time, I was introduced to Fado music. The memories my parents recount affirm my instant fascination with this genre of music. They would find me, standing in the middle of the living room, trying to emulate the melodies and lyrics I had heard.

At the beginning, my family struggled to comprehend my sudden interest and passion for Fado music. However, I made it abundantly clear that my aspiration was to become a Fado singer. The following year, I began attending Fado houses. Predominantly learnt from my seniors, I cultivated my talent for this genre. The big names like Amália Rodrigues, Fernanda Maria, Teresa Tarouca, Lucília do Carmo, Ana Moura, and Carminho have tremendously influenced and inspired my musical journey. Gradually, I developed my unique style within the traditional confines of Fado music.

Today, I perform regularly in esteemed Fado houses; Mesa de Frades, Parreirinha de Alfama, Casa de Linhares – Bacalhau de Mollho, Fado Menor, form the list. In addition to this, I have also graced television screens on several occasions. I participated in shows such as “Uma Canção Para Ti” in 2011, “Grande Prix de Fado” and “The Voice Portugal” in 2015, and “Festival da Canção” in 2017.

At the age of 23, my life orbits around my two great loves, Psychology and Fado. I strive to maintain a balanced life between my studies, performances in Fado houses, and concerts. The unique mellifluous quality of my young voice, combined with my reverence for tradition, has helped me carve out an identity that is distinctly mine. I represent not just the modern evolution of Fado but also its deep-seated traditional essence.
