Swan Lake’s Majestic Rendition by the International Ballet Company at La Laguna University

Experience the beauty of one of the most renowned classical ballet masterpieces in the world, Swan Lake, presented by the International Ballet Company. This captivating show will grace the stage of the La Laguna University Auditorium. Swan Lake first debuted on 4th March 1877 at the illustrious Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Almost two decades later, it was revived on 15th January 1895 at the revered Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. Its timeless appeal has made it a favourite amongst modern choreographers who continue to perform this celebrated ballet under the title, Swan Lake – Ballet from Saint Petersburg.

The enchanting musical score of Swan Lake was crafted by the famed composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Known for his inspiring body of work, Tchaikovsky has composed the music for other notable ballets including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet and Overture 1812.

The gripping storyline of Swan Lake follows Prince Siegfried, who is deeply in love with Princess Odette. A malicious sorcerer, Von Rothbart, has cast a spell on Odette, transforming her into a swan during the day, and back into a human at night. The enchantment can only be undone by true love. The story takes a darker turn when Siegfried, who is due to select his bride at an upcoming ball, unwittingly falls prey to the sorcerer’s trickery and mistakenly makes a promise to Von Rothbart’s daughter, Odile, the Black Swan.

The esteemed 13th edition of the La Laguna University’s annual ballet event offers an extensive array of conferences, workshops, and seminars suitable for everyone. This year, the event will be accessible both in-person in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and virtually. The event is scheduled to commence on 30th November and conclude on 8th December 2023.

The International Ballet Company presents Swan Lake, one of the best-known classical ballets in the world, in the La Laguna University Auditorium. Its first performance dates back to 4 March 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Almost twenty years later, on 15 January 1895, it was performed once again at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. It was so successful that today’s choreographers still perform this classic ballet under the name Swan Lake – Ballet from Saint Petersburg. The music for Swan Lake was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, musical author of other ballets such as The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet and Overture 1812. The main plot of the ballet revolves around Siegfried, a prince in love with Princess Odette, over whom the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart cast a spell to turn her into a swan during the day and human at night. The curse can only be broken if the princess finds true love. Siegfried however, who must choose a wife at the next ball, also falls victim to the magician’s deceptions. So much so that he manages to confuse him to the point of making a promise to his daughter Odile, the Black Swan. The thirteenth edition of the Lagunero university event dedicated to ballet includes a wide variety of conferences, workshops and seminars aimed at the general public and will take place in San Cristóbal de La Laguna and online from 30 November to 8 December 2023.
